“Where is she?!” Ace yelled at Sidriel. “They can’t just summon her from here without her desire to be summoned!”

Sidriel shrank back against the wall, unsure of what to say. He’d taken his anger out on the wrong person, but there was no one else around. Sachiel wasn’t answering his summons either, which meant, she was still out looking for Lucifer.

“Brother,” he heard from the door. His brother Raum stood against the door jamb, looking sweaty from his workout in the compound. When Sachiel had gone on the hunt for Lucifer, Raum had come down to help Ace with figuring out what to do about their lost brothers. Although he hadn’t Fallen with the rest of his brothers, he was still able to jump from Purgatory to Heaven without an issue. He had no role in either Purgatory or Heaven and that meant he had free reign in both places. He preferred Heaven, he had always claimed it had lovelier women to be with. “He can’t know the ways of Heaven. Your girl is half angel, did it ever occur to you that she ascended herself?”

Ace frowned. “Why would she do that?”

“Maybe she didn’t know what she was doing. Was she upset? Did she want to get away?”

“We were just eating…”

“Did you upset her? Since I have been here, you’ve barely spent time with her.”

Ace dismissed Sidriel from the room, and sat down in the big leather chair of his father’s. He couldn’t talk to her, he’d already put her through so much drama and now he couldn’t even comfort her.

“Look,” Raum said, coming closer to the desk and sitting opposite him. “It’s not going to be easy. Her friend died. She was thrust into this life suddenly, she has powers, she has an Arch for a father, everything she thought was real, isn’t. You are the one constant in her life now…start acting like it.”

Ace watched as his brother got up and walked out of the office without another word. He knew his brother was right, but he had no idea how to do whatever it was he was meant to do. There was a reason intercourse was outlawed unless you were wed…and now he knew why! He had no way of understanding how tough managing a relationship and being a father would be, let alone ruling Purgatory. He couldn’t believe how much he loved that little girl already, and she had only been in his life for less than a week.

He pushed up from the chair and headed down the hall to his quarters, looking for Faye in case she had come home but she was nowhere to be found. Making his way to the cot, he watched over Fairlee, sleeping soundlessly. Her tiny chest rose and fell with soundless breathing, her tiny hands twitching with her dreams. How could she be so perfect when he felt like he was falling apart?

Sidriel came into his room. “Asmodeus is here.”

“Just him?”

Sidriel nodded. “Your brothers Beelzebub and Sammael have not returned.
